Breaking: Keir Starmer Announces Social Media Ban for Children Under 16
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the United Kingdom will ban children under the age of 16 from accessing social media platforms, describing the move as a necessary step to protect young people from online harms.
Speaking on the policy, Starmer acknowledged that social media has provided benefits to many young people but said the government had concluded that the risks now outweigh those advantages.
“This is a big step, real change for our children and our future,” Starmer said. “Today I can announce that the government will ban access to social media for all children under the age of 16.”
The Prime Minister said the decision was not taken lightly and stressed that it was informed by concerns about the impact of social media on children’s safety, wellbeing, and mental health.
Speaking as a parent, Starmer said he understood the fears shared by many families regarding the online environment facing young people today.
“All I’ve ever wanted for my own children is for them to be happy and for them to be safe,” he said.
Questioning whether social media platforms currently provide a safe and healthy environment for children, Starmer argued that stronger measures were needed to safeguard the next generation.
The announcement marks one of the most significant online safety policies introduced by the UK government and is expected to generate widespread debate among parents, educators, technology companies, and child welfare advocates.
