Sowore to Remain in Kuje Prison as Court Delays Ruling on Bail Application

Image
Human rights activist and AAC presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, will remain in Kuje Correctional Centre after a Federal High Court in Abuja postponed its ruling on his application challenging the revocation of his bail. Justice Muhammad Umar fixed June 30 to rule on Sowore’s request to set aside the bench warrant issued for his arrest and restore the bail earlier granted to him. During Wednesday’s proceedings, Sowore’s lawyer, Raphael Adakole, who appeared for senior advocate Adeyinka Fusika (SAN), urged the court to reverse the order that revoked his client’s bail and ordered his remand. The defence also sought Sowore’s temporary release into the custody of his legal team pending the ruling, citing health concerns and assuring the court of his continued attendance at future hearings. However, the prosecution opposed the application, arguing that the defendant had not provided sufficient grounds for the court to exercise its discretion in his favour. In his ruling, Justice U...

DSS Breaks Silence on Sowore’s Remand, Orders Probe Into Courtroom Incident

Image
The Department of State Services (DSS) has reacted to public concerns surrounding the remand of activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in Kuje Prison, insisting that the decision was made by the court and not the agency. In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Deputy Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Favour Dozie, the DSS said it had noted concerns over events that unfolded at the Federal High Court in Abuja, including a reported altercation involving Sowore, a correctional officer, and some DSS operatives. The agency disclosed that its Director-General has ordered an immediate investigation into the conduct of operatives involved in the incident. According to the DSS, Sowore’s prosecution stemmed from social media posts made in August 2025 in which he referred to President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal.” The agency stated that before filing charges, it had written to Sowore requesting a retraction of the statement, adding that legal act...

Image
Human rights activist and AAC presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has declared that imprisonment will not stop his campaign for political change after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his remand in Kuje Correctional Centre. Sowore made the remarks shortly after Justice M.G. Umar ordered that he be remanded over his absence from a previous court session in the ongoing case against him. According to Sowore, he missed the hearing because he was consulting with his new legal team led by Olumide Fusika (SAN). He said his lawyer informed the court of the reason for his absence, but the judge proceeded to order his remand. Reacting to the development, Sowore described the charges against him as “bogus” and insisted that he remains undeterred by the court’s decision. “I need hardly say that I am the least bothered by this development. Imprisonment has never defeated a just cause, and it never will,” he said. The activist also called on his supporters and Nigerians to remain stead...

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Department of Private Schools and addressed to administrators of both public and non-state (private) schools. According to the circular, the ministry observed that some school administrators had begun collecting money from parents and guardians under the guise of organizing graduation and end-of-session events for learners.
